The truth about detainees

I read an awesome editorial today that details how detainees are treated here at Camp Cropper in baghdad.  As some of you know, actually all two of you who may read this, i am deployed to Baghdad currently.  Iraq is quickly falling to the wayside as things ramp up in Afghanistan again.  In spite of this, this editorial came out detailing how one journalist found the treatment of detainees here in Baghdad:

I recommend you read it.  It is rather objective and is the truth.  Trust me, i can attest to how we treat these people.

My email to the MT GOP

Today i wrote the MT GOP an email.  It speaks for itself.  Call me crazy, foolhardy, disillusioned whathaveyou, but i mean it.  Let me know your thoughts.

Greetings,

I have been doing a lot of thinking lately about the current political climate in washington.  The democratic party has started some momentum to tear themselves apart, and got power hungry thus losing some of the support.  Now is the key time for the next several election cycles to re-seize the initiative as the conservative party and gain back our lost ground.  There are several things that have to be done to really successfully achieve this.

First of all, the young voter group.  Face it, liberal ideology has been infiltrating the system using media (movies, reality TV, news etc) and the young vote uses these mediums heavier than any other age group.  They are the future republican support base, so if we dont start focusing on reaching that group the support base is going to continue to erode as it gets old, and eventually dies.  Many people still view the republican party as the party of grumpy old men set in the ways of the past.  How do you reach young people?

I am a young person.  I turn 25 this year and i am a fiscally conservative, socially moderate individual that likes to stick to his guns.  However most people only believe what they hear on the news or from teachers.  I had a very liberal American Government teacher at Helena High, and i’m slightly embarassed to admit that in my first election (2004) i voted for Kerry, because of that influence.  Then i joined the military, got older, and started to really not like the crap that was being pushed my way.  There are others like us.  How do you influence us?

Personally i went through a political party self searching journey.  I got dismayed the GOP couldn’t get it’s act together in order to hold on this last election, and sat feebly by as round after round of complete and total BS went through congress.  I didn’t feel represented.  I knew the democrats were a resounding “HELL NO”, but then where?  the Green party?  please…the libertarians?  Ron Paul is a bit of a quack…i dont think he realized it.  I have recentered on the GOP in light of this infighting of the democrats, and im hoping we can pull this out.

This is why i’m trying to help.  The GOP needs some new candidates, new speakers, that are something we arent used to seeing.  As soon as someone sees the “new candidate” the GOP is fronting is another old montana rancher, or lawyer, or someone who has been a political crone :cough: TESTER :cough: (sorry i still cant believe he got elected) that is being nominated because he knows someone….we lose interest.  We need some candidates and public speakers that are young, intelligent, and know how to talk to people.  It will catch peoples attention.  Young people havent had a long political career to make enemies, no affairs to hide, few legal embarassments, no past voting records to be ashamed of and they are largely in touch with what America needs.

Personally i’ve thought many times about what it’d take to run for national office.  Is this ambitious?  Yes.  Do i know that the American people are tired of not feeling represented and are disenchanted with the current political situation?  Yes…just look at congress’ approval rating.  Yes everyone rates their reps high back home, but then congress as a whole gets marginal ratings.  If you’re even still reading this email, i’ll spend the next paragraph explaining some of the things that i feel are important that the people of Montana could appreciate.

I’ve been taught ever since my first government class in 4th grade that the government works at the behest of the people.  Your job as a representative is to represent your district, not special interests, not whoever has the most power in congress, but the people who put their hopes in your hands.  I personally feel that hasnt been happening for quite some time.  I believe in smaller government, fewer taxes on small business, paying down debt, and actually reading what you sign.  I am an ardent supporter of the bill of rights, the 2nd amendment is plain as day, and it says “freedom OF religion”, not FROM it.  I am a little more moderate socially.  I don’t support gay marriage, but if gay people want to have equal protections under the law (NOT under God) then they should be able to have a union.  I believe that abortion should only be allowed in cases of rape, incest, or in cases of severe risk to the mother or fetus.  I feel that we don’t need universal healthcare, we just need to revamp medicaid.

Look, bottom line is if i was ever asked to run for political office i’d seriously consider leaving the military to do it.  I enjoy being in the Army, and it has taught me innumerable facts of leadership, however i feel i could better serve the people of Montana and America by working together with other leaders to get America back on the best path.  I was born in eastern Montana, grew up in Helena, joined the army in Missoula, and got my undergrad at Carroll College.  I know this is a viable option.  I leave it to you.

Thank you,

Kyle D. Borne
